How to embrace your inner Barbiecore

Did you miss the Barbiecore craze this summer?

Firstly, how? Hot pink has been screaming for attention across all the socials.

Secondly, don’t worry. The trend is showing no signs of letting up and with the new Barbie movie not set to be released until July 2023, we reckon you’ve still plenty of time to stock up on pink fashion essentials and create your own Barbie world vibe.

So what are you waiting for? Read on to discover more about this key style and how to work it. Come on, Barbie, let’s go party….

What is Barbiecore?

It doesn’t take a genius to work out that the Barbiecore trend is connected to the famous doll, but this obsession is more than just about showing nostalgic love for the retro Mattel toy.

Where there’s Barbie, there’s pink, and this is the defining element of this look, with vibrant, bubbly pink taking over as the colour crush of 2022.

According to Klarna, there has been a 970% increase in the number of people buying pink mini dresses since the start of the year. Google also reported a huge spike in ‘Barbiecore’ searches over the summer months (hands up if you bagged a pink bikini?).

Barbie’s mum (aka American businesswoman, Ruth Handler, who invented the blond bombshell back in 1959) believes: ‘Barbie always represented the fact that a woman has choices’. And what could be more fun than deciding what to wear?!

As the Barbie brand has taken more steps to be inclusive and embrace diversity, celebrities and influencers have been quick to jump on the girlie trend with Kim Kardashian, Lizzo, Anne Hathaway and Zendaya just some of the high-profile names stepping out in pink.

How to do Barbiecore

The essence of the Barbiecore look is head-to-toe pink…don’t worry, roller boots are optional!

If you want to go all out, you’re going to need pink accessories too – a pink coat, footwear, a bag, you get the gist.

Bright, bubblegum shades of pink are the hallmark of Barbie glam, and AW22 is a great time to invest in this shade, injecting much needed colour and life into dreary winter wardrobes.

All a bit too pink for you? If you want to nod to the fashion but make less of a statement, you can. Try adding a pop of pink to your outfit instead. Pink sunglasses are great for this, so too are key pieces of pink jewellery or a lightweight scarf. Even a splash of hot pink across your nails is effective.

Another way to work the look more subtly, is to dial down your shade. Instead of going for hot pink and vivid tones, try blush or baby pink. You’ll still get the same Barbie-esque effect but as part of a softer, more understated look.
